The lower secondary school for immigrants provides full time education for students to learn Finnish and gain the lower secondary (peruskoulu) completion certificate. The certificate is the first step in formal education. Language courses start from zero level and above. The aim is develop students' studies in Finnish as they participate in regular lessons in all school subjects.
First Steps in Finland is intended for migrants who have not completed such education in their own country. However, migrants who have problems getting certificates awarded outside Finland accepted can also be eligible.
