Compulsory and elective courses

The Finnish national curriculum requires the completion of 44 courses. These comprise compulsory and elective courses set out by law. The elective courses are 'in depth' courses. In addition there are elective school based courses. These courses are designed by the school.

High School Studies in English cover many of the compulsory courses and in depth courses on the national curriculum. Courses leading to the AICE Diploma are school based courses.

AICE Diploma requirements – The system of subject credits

The six credits can be obtained as single or double credits. Single credits are for subjects examined at AS level. In some cases double credits, which are in depth extension examinations, can be achieved in one subject. These are referred to as A level. Points are awarded for each credit and then totalled. Diplomas are awarded at pass, merit and distinction levels.

Subjects are chosen from three groups

Group A

  • Maths and Sciences - Mathematics, statistics, physics, chemistry, biology, environmental science, thinking skills and psychology (which can also be considered a group C subject)

Group B

  • Languages - English, Finnish as a second language. (French and German are both evening courses, not suitable for beginners)

Group C

  • Arts and Humanities - Art, history, geography, sociology (next 2005-2006), business studies, literature in English
