Students accepted into Eira High School complete a three-year programme of study comprising forty-four courses. On completion of these courses they first receive the lukion päättötodistus, the high school leaving certificate. This entitles them to complete their studies by taking the matriculation examination (ylioppilastutkinto) in Finnish. At the same time students at Eira High School can take a range of internationally recognised High School level qualifications administered by Cambridge University.
Courses in English are open to all registered students at Eiran aikuislukio. If students are mainly studying in Finnish a minimum grade average of 8 in English is advised. Further information on Finnish Lukio and AICE.
Studying is course based and the student can choose a personal study plan based on availability of courses. The school year is divided into 5 periods. Students should take 4 – 6 courses a period. Each period comprises 22 hours of tuition plus a course test and then a test return. The purpose of the test return is first and foremost a feedback session, it is also administratively important for course grades are entered in grade books at this time.

The Finnish national curriculum for secondary education is broad based and aims to develop mature, cultivated individuals. The curriculum includes core subjects such as English, Maths, Science and humanities, and äidinkieli or Finnish as a second language which has parity status.
There are compulsory and elective courses. Details of courses taught in English are published in the green booklet Course Descriptions. The High School Leaving Certificate is awarded on completion of the forty-four courses.
Finnish language courses are an essential part of the curriculum for students to develop their Finnish language skills whilst they study in English. The level of the Finnish demanded for the school leaving certificate is high and students should begin studying Finnish immediately on entry. Students at Eira High School study Finnish language courses on four mornings a week.
In some cases the High School Leaving Certificate alone confers the right to take an entrance test at polytechnic.
